Herman’s Hideaway- the story behind the legend

Denver’s longest running live music venue started when Herman Roth bought what was then Cunningham’s Lounge in 1962. Cunningham’s was Denver’s most recommended restaurant in the 40s and 50s. Herman ran Cunningham’s for over two decades as a shot-and-beer joint for the blue-collar workers up the street at Samsonite Luggage and Gates Rubber Company. Because of the famed 50 cent beer-and-shot special, Herman would often show up at 6 AM to a line waiting to get in. He would run weekly tabs for the workers and often cashed their paychecks.
In 1982 Herman’s son Allan started working with his father after running a successful bar in Boulder and his own talent agency, and after a year of trial and error, the musical side of Herman’s was born.

Herman and Allan successfully work together for the next 16 years, creating an explosive live music scene in Denver. Renowned bands like Phish (first Denver show!), Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, 311, Faith No More, Big Head Todd, Janes Addiction, Flobots, The Railbenders, The Fray, Brett Dennen, Tab Benoit and many others made Herman’s the place to play in Denver. These were the days before AEG, Soda Jerk and Live Nation took over nearly every venue in town and around the country.

Herman passed away in 1999, after never taking a day off- including the three days after the heart attack that would end up taking his life.
In 2001, Allan’s son Mike started helping with the day-to-day operations. A few years later, Allan was diagnosed with colon cancer and soon would be in for the fight of his life. After two serious battles with cancer, he now does most of his work from home, but has been cancer free for almost 10 years!

For over 54 years now, Herman’s has been one of the most recognized local businesses in Colorado and is the last truly independent venue left in Denver. While the corporate giants continue to battle over National bands, leading to sky-high ticket prices and inconvenient convenience fees, Herman’s will always support our local scene, local bands, neighbors, and friends. Herman’s continues to be the only real venue in town that pays more than 100% of door revenue to the bands each and every year. After 36 years hosting over 32,000+ bands, we feel like it’s our responsibility to continue providing a great stage and superb sound for the local scene to grow. We are the last premier venue around that’s also a small business- and we can’t do it without you!
