It all started on a warm night in August, some time around the beginning of the new millennium. Scott Deadman left the screen door open, and the mosquitos were riding the waves of humid air into the recording studio. Burton had passed out on the couch, and one of the little bastards had landed on Burton's cue-ball noggin. Scott wasn't paying any attention. He had his headphones on and was listening to the new track over and over and over.
Something flickered across the computer monitor. Too fast for Scott to understand what he'd seen, but it lingered just long enough for him to know he'd seen - something.
"Did you see that?" he asked, turning toward Burton. Burton answered with a trickle of drool down his jawline. Scott noticed the massive mosquito sucking the life out of Burton's shiny dome. He grabbed a spiral notebook of Burton's lyrics, rolled it into a bludgeoning weapon, and swung it at the mosquito. It exploded on Burton's crown. and blood immediately began to flow down his forehead.
"What the f***?" Burton yelled, jumping to his feet. He looked a comical combination of angry and confused.
"Did you see that?" Scott asked. The screen flickered again.
"Did you see that?" Burton asked. Scott turned back to face the monitor. His headphones were still on, and the song was building up to its really epic chorus. Blood dripped from Burton's forehead to the floor. They both leaned in toward the monitor - their faces about a foot from its plasma screen. The screen flickered.
